Sue has worked in the Emergency Department since 1987. She is an exceptional nurse providing outstanding high-quality patient care. She is an outstanding role model for the nursing profession and mentor for the next generation of nurses. I have had the opportunity to observe Sue on numerous occasions provide care to emergency room patients. She exemplifies the true meaning of a dedicated and compassionate nurse. She is the nurse that all nurses hope to become.
I recently implemented the emergency department core for new nurses. This group consists of 13 new nurses. I always start the class off going around the room and allowing the nurses to share meaningful experiences that have happened on the unit. One of the nurses shared a story of a patient he was caring for by himself and Sue just happened to walk by the room and noticed the patient did not look well. She went into the room and inquired what was going on with the patient and quickly recognized that the patient was decompensating. She took immediate action even though this was not her patient. She took this nurse under her wing while providing excellent patient care, sharing knowledge and expertise with this nurse.
After this story, several other nurses started sharing stories of how Sue has helped educate and mentor them as well. This is a true testament, of how experienced nurses can impact and shape the next generation of nurses. Sue provides preeminent care to every patient she cares for, by sharing her passion and experience with other nurses, she will continue to impact even more patients through the nurses she has mentored.
