This past March, I was shocked by my diagnosis of cancer, and absolutely scared to death of undergoing chemotherapy. I dreaded the side effects and changes it would cause in my cognitive function, my physical condition, as well as my body image. My anxiety was off the charts!

I was so fortunate to have Susan assigned as my Chemo Nurse. Throughout the process, she was so reassuring, informative, caring, as well as skilled, that she made my terrifying situation, tolerable. Susan understood my sense of loss of control over my own body, and provided me with support and strategies for how to negotiate the side effects. She included me in the medical side of things, always telling me what meds I was receiving and why. She accommodated my visitors and was very gracious and welcoming towards them. I was given a private room to enhance my privacy. She always had an upbeat, caring attitude and loving touch. She was my advocate on several occasions, obtaining orders from my oncologist, and encouraging me when my counts were too low to infuse those days.

She made me feel understood and well cared for. Most importantly she made me feel safe, that she was watching out for me, and that I could trust that I was receiving the best care when she was there. I cannot thank her enough for her kindness and compassion across those 5 months.
