When I think of the DAISY Award, I quickly think of my co-worker, Tasha Comstock without any hesitation. While she is one of the newer nurses on the pediatric unit, one would never be able to tell. Tasha is compassionate, intelligent, and goal-oriented. Tasha lives family centered care and always goes above and beyond for her patients. When we can't find Tasha on the unit, we know where to find her- patient rooms- getting to know her patients and families as people.
Tasha thinks outside of the box, is quick to notice patient anxieties and fears, and consequently incorporates support staff as appropriate. She is a team player and seeks out unit projects that could benefit our patients, such as implementing a unit type 1 diabetes education program and creating a unit crisis support patient booklet.
More recently, Tasha was assigned to one of our long-term patients. Early in his pediatric admission, Tasha understood his prognosis and knew that he'd benefit from a care team, which she initiated so the patient would have consistent nurses. Tasha provided space for the patient to feel comfortable to talk about his feelings and fears about upcoming surgeries and procedures. Tasha mentioned other social concerns that are common for a teenager being hospitalized like schooling, schedules, and his family/friends. During a period while the patient's father was sick and needed to stay home, Tasha called him to update him on changes in care. I know these calls were meaningful for dad.
While I also worked closely with this patient, I could tell that he developed a trusting relationship with Tasha. It was evident that he felt safe when he was in her care. While caring for a patient that tugged at our heartstrings, I applaud Tasha for keeping boundaries and a strong work/life balance. I am so happy that WellSpan has adopted the DAISY Award, and I feel so lucky to be able to nominate such a deserving individual so early in the program. Tasha is a special nurse and has a heart of gold! It's truly amazing how her presence as a RN transforms care to the next level.
