Theresa is an exceptional nurse. She continually works with complex and critical patients on the bone marrow transplant unit and always deals with challenging patients and families in a calm and compassionate manner. Recently, we had a very complex patient with a challenging family. Theresa was assigned this patient and had her consistently for weeks. She also had this patient while she needed to be transferred to the ICU. This transfer was very hard on the family, but Theresa was able to show compassion and put the patient and family's needs first. The next day, Theresa even volunteered to go take care of this patient in the ICU in order to maintain continuity of patient care. While in the ICU, Theresa advocated for the family's needs and values for palliation such as ensuring that there was time for hand molds and allowing the family to grieve in their own way.
Theresa has been constantly recognized by all health care team members during team debriefs. Her empathy and phenomenal nursing care for this patient and family was evident and voiced by physicians, allied health, and administration. Theresa continues to exemplify grace and compassion with all of her patients on the BMT unit. She continues to add herself to core nursing lists of challenging patients. She provides care to these challenging patients by being empathetic and putting the patient and family needs first. She is a valuable team member to our unit and always comes to work with a smile on her face. As nurses, we are always happy when Theresa is working with us. She is a great role model for fellow colleagues on how to provide compassionate care, as well as maintaining a healthy work-life balance. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
