My husband was at NGHS for a double hernia repair two weeks ago and Tracie Terrell was the nurse who prepared him for surgery. Tracie was very kind and patient as we went through the procedure. She made us both feel comfortable and explained everything to us. An hour and a half into surgery, things did not go as planned, and the surgery ended up having to be stopped. The surgeon came out to the waiting room and explained to me what had happened. Shortly thereafter, Tracie came to the waiting room to sit with me and hug me, hold my hand and comfort me. My son was on his way but well over an hour drive to get to Gainesville. Tracie frequently checked on my husband in PACU and would come out to the waiting room, hug me, and give me updates. She even offered to go get me something to drink or eat.
Tracie went way above and beyond taking care of my husband, but especially me, at a very difficult time. When my son and his wife arrived, Tracie was with a patient. The woman at the desk called her to let her know he was there. A few minutes later Tracie and the surgeon came out and sat with us, and she held my hand, as the doctor gave us all an update. She did this all while taking care of the patients she was assigned to in pre-op. My husband went to the ICU on the vent that afternoon, and progressed to Ronnie Green to be on continuous oxygen monitoring and then to the Medical/Surgical floor and back to the OR three days later. Tracie checked on us as he was going back to the OR for the second time and the next day upstairs as he recovered.
I can honestly say I would not have done nearly as well with all the unknowns and uncertainties, by myself. If Tracie had not been with me, it would have been unbearable. I always say that God puts us where he needs us, and he knew I needed support, kindness and a level head with hugs and prayers that day. He put Tracie Terrell right there with me that terrible, emotional and frightening day. His choice of Tracie couldn't have been more perfect. I will be forever thankful to her as will my husband, my son and my daughter-in-law.
