Tracy received a call from an unknown caller to the unit. At this time, the caller would not identify himself. He indicated he had no purpose in life and wanted to end it all. Tracy continued to keep the caller on the phone and gain information about the patient in order to provide identification and then contact authorities. The patient continued to be uncooperative and discontinued the call at one point, but then called back. Tracy remained calm and continued to speak to the caller as the other members of the team worked diligently to assist in identification. This call lasted approximately 1.5 hours.
Because of Tracy’s calm and continued efforts, she was able to keep the caller on long enough to get police to his home. Although we will never know the outcome, Tracy’s effort may have saved this caller’s life.
