I am an RN at Abrazo Scottsdale Campus in Phoenix, AZ and on an evening in late December, I witnessed the most amazing, genuine and heartfelt care any human can provide. Tressa Yantz is an ED room RN who was assigned a male patient that was brought in emergently with altered mental status and it was obvious that this man was in the process of taking his last breaths. He was accompanied by his doting wife of many years and his daughter in tow, the imminence was obvious, you could read it across the entire department's staff. Worry and concern was expressed for not only the family, but for the loved ones they were attempting to reach on such short notice, before the Christmas Holiday. Another colleague and I had presented to the ED to pick up a different patient in the bed next to him that Tressa was caring for and in doing so, witnessed the heartbreak in the nurse's eyes when they finally drew the curtain and she was able to finally express some emotion herself. With a single tear running down her cheek she took a deep breath, wiped away the tears and continued to chart through her watery eyes. It was evident that she knew on this of all Christmas Eves that she was likely going to be next to him when he took his final breath. Tressa and the doctor did not fail that patient or his family. Tressa stepped up to the plate, never leaving his side and reassuring the family that they were doing everything they could in their power and that if he was going to pass, he would pass with dignity and would be comfortable during his final moments. Thank you, Tressa, for not being afraid to show the family that nurses and doctors are human as well and that it's ok to cry.
