Vickie is the epitome of what a nurse should be. My son, who is non-verbal was admitted from the ER early on a Saturday morning. Since it was the weekend, we had little communication with the doctors. My husband and I became very frustrated not knowing what the plans were to help our son, who was very sick. He had been crying nonstop since before we arrived in the ER. He cried all through the night.
The next morning, a Sunday, Vicki arrived and everything changed. She came in and greeted my son, "Hey there, my friend. I hear you have not been feeling well. We are going to get that taken care of today. My goal for this is to get you comfortable." What a relief. After talking with us, Vickie realized that there was a breakdown of communication between us and the doctors. She quickly bridged that gap. His care improved greatly throughout the day. She was so caring and compassionate. She was our nurse for two more days. She caught an IV before it went bad. Vickie also paid attention to his skin and caught a spot on his wrist before it began to break down. She noticed when my son started having a seizure and was able to communicate to the doctors his behavior in a way my husband and I were not able. She took our layman's terms and presented them with the appropriate medical terms so that the doctors knew exactly what was going on.
Vickie was able to get my son to smile and laugh and he had not done that in days. "Laughter is the best medicine", is an old adage, and very truthful. I loved how she talked directly to my son, even though he could not talk back to her. Vickie was the best nurse and we will never forget her.
