Ms. Wen-Yo Kuo has always been interested in “people”; ever since she was a small child she had the dream of becoming a nurse. Her goal has always been to bring patients hope and to decrease their pain and suffering, while helping them to return to normal daily living.
She has been a nurse for ten years, working as a surgical intensive care nurse before working as a home care nurse. She made this transition because she realized there is an ever growing elderly population and there may be a greater need for nurses to care for these patients. With her critical care experience, she feels more confident and competent to be a home care nurse.
Since starting as a home care nurse two years ago, she had noticed that elderly patients with Foley catheter showed a steady increase of skin tear, or skin abrasion. The problem is compounded by the fact that most elderly patients already have fragile skin. So she took the initiative, and with the input from patients and their family she invented a new device to secure the Foley catheter. The use of the new device resulted in zero incidents of skin tear or abrasion. Nurse Kuo has since shared her device with the Taiwan Nursing Association, for which she received high praise and the best innovation award.
Min-Sheng Hospital is proud to recognize outstanding nurses like Wen-Yo who take initiatives, continuously improve our delivery of patient care, and who share our knowledge within our health care system and beyond.
