On October 28, 2013 Dr. Barbara Boss received The DAISY Faculty Award in honor and celebration of her 34 years of service to the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing, the hundreds of students whose lives she has impacted, and the nursing profession, which she has always represented with incredible vigor, vitality and compassion. The recognition committee put together a 33 page digital scrapbook that contained numerous stories from students and colleagues of the influence and inspiration they have received from Dr. Boss over the years. Here is just one of the stories in the book:
Other than my mom, Barbara Boss has been the most influential woman in my life. As my teacher in graduate school, she instilled a confidence in me that I could make a difference through nursing education. Daily, I recall her phrases of wisdom, e.g. Set the expectations high at the beginning; Students truly experience things for the first time in the patient's room - regardless of how much they practice in the lab; We can learn so much from the 'mentally ill.' She has been right every time. As my mentor and dissertation chair, Barbara gently hammered the same principle of academic integrity into the research process. I understand better now the true gift it was to have her leadership during those years.
Words really cannot capture the whole of my admiration, respect, and love for Barbara Boss. She has encouraged me with her own stories of living and growing. One conversation over coffee with her can influence my thinking beyond measure. I am thankful for her perspective and insight - in every aspect of being human. Barbara shows the rest of us... This is how life is done.
I am eternally grateful this amazing person knows my name!
