2 South has been a fairly stable unit for the past 3-4 years. Late last year, it was decided that 2 South would become the Designated Training Unit for all new grads starting in Med/Surg and NRT. Since the inception of the DTU in February to current, the team on 2 South has oriented 22 new grads, including staff hired to 2S. NRT had struggled in the past to identify a unit to allow their new team members to orient on. This has allowed NRT staff to have consistent orientation. The team was able to set expectations that new grads took to their home unit such as Bedside Shift Report and had exposure to the use of whiteboards before being implemented on other units. Several preceptors needed to be identified in order for the DTU to be successful. All who had been asked to take the 4-hour preceptor class took the class without hesitation, and the team has since grown more preceptors. It has almost become a "rite of passage" to precept new staff- the team is eager for the opportunity to assist with onboarding new grads. The team enjoys teaching and has asked for more new grads when they are finishing up with a new grad. To assist the other med/surg units with orienting new grads, we have built relationships across med/surg.
