They didn’t just care for my body, they cared for my spirit.
2 West was nominated for the way they bring clinical excellence and genuine human connection to every moment of care. Their nomination described a team that “consistently demonstrates extraordinary collaboration, clinical excellence, and deeply compassionate care.” Across the unit, their commitment is seen in how they communicate, support one another, and respond when Veterans and families need them most.
One story shared in the nomination described a medically complex Veteran with repeated heart failure admissions who felt overwhelmed and hopeless. The 2 West team quickly came together with cardiology, pharmacy, social work, and dietary services to create a clear care plan. Nurses took extra time to teach, reassure, and help him feel confident going home. At follow-up, he shared that he had “never felt so supported by a healthcare team.”
Another story reflected the heart of this team. When a Veteran developed a hematoma after surgery, staff responded quickly and stayed with him through the fear of that moment. When he asked for a chaplain and one was not immediately available, the surgeon offered to pray with him, and the nurse held his hand. Later, the Veteran shared, “They didn’t just care for my body, they cared for my spirit.”
2 West also continues to advance nursing practice through quality improvement work focused on patient safety and preventing harm. Their efforts reflect a team committed to learning, improving, and giving Veterans the very best care possible.
The 2 West team reminds us that excellent nursing is found in both clinical skill and presence. For their teamwork, advocacy, and lasting impact on Veterans and families, we are proud to recognize 2 West Acute Med/Surg as the 2026 DAISY Team Award Honoree.
