I would like to recognize Tiffany Sopha (RN), Shannon Williams (RN), Dr. Danielle Hallett, Brittany Ellis (RT), and Marlowe Thomas (RT) as a DAISY Team.
Recently Shannon was precepting Tiffany. They were caring for a patient who was pronounced brain dead, and the family was emotionally struggling with this unexpected outcome. His daughter shared that in his last days, her father voiced a desire to go outside. Shannon and Tiffany heard this and saw an opportunity to go above and beyond to assist in this family’s complicated grief. They coordinated care with the intensivist Dr. Hallett, fellow nurses, and the respiratory therapists (Brittany and Marlow) to get this patient outside in the healing garden. His family was present and spent a few hours in the sunshine with their loved one- picking flowers for him and putting them in his hat and hands and sharing beautiful stories about the life he lived. Tiffany stayed with them to offer an emotional ear and ensure continued care for the patient. Shannon seamlessly stepped into caring for their other patient to ensure Tiffany’s powerful presence with the family. Marlow and Brittany took turns being present for his continued ventilation needs. When it came to time remove his breathing tube, Dr. Hallett did so in the garden as well in order to continue supporting the healing impact that being outside had for the family.
Because of this amazing coordination of patient-centered care, this patient’s family was able to make a dying wish happen and hopefully someday look back at this moment as a peaceful end for their dad. It was awe-inspiring to see our team in action, it was a beautiful moment living our mission that I will never forget.
