In the midst of uncertain and unprecedented times, nurses volunteered to open up new COVID units at Mt. Zion. These nurses worked tirelessly, caring for patients affected by a new and unpredictable virus. They were joined by other colleagues to support growing numbers of COVID patients and help offset the larger campus capacity. They worked together, teaching patients how to cope with their illness and new limitations, and they mourned together the losses patients experienced, from a loss of independence, loss of strength and mobility, or loss of life. These nurses helped patients navigate their new reality, and helped family members prepare for the additional needs their loved ones would have upon returning home. They worked with a high level of autonomy, navigating the pandemic, advocating for their patients, for each other, and for resources to ensure they would be able to give the high standard of care associated with UCSF. Today almost two years after the pandemic began, these nurses continue with the level of excellence for their patients and the care they receive.
