All Staff of 4 East Medical-Surgical Telemetry Unit of Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center
The 4-East staff have the biggest heart and goes above and beyond. When it comes to caring for all the patients, especially the oncology patients and their families. Staff automatically offer to put in a sleeping chair for the family. When patients are diagnosed with cancer and look very lost and confused, staff are just there to comfort, educate, and provide support for them and their families until they get familiar with the routine. The 4-East team gets to know patients personally, knowing their families, their favorite things to do. They hold hands, cry, and laugh along with their patients.
When patients get sick and need a higher level of care, 4-East staff visits them in the ICU or DOU. When the patient doesn't make it after battling cancer, we have staff who go to the viewing or funeral. Staff also goes above and beyond, collecting money to donate to the family. They also host an Oncology Day to celebrate love, healing, and life with the patients and their families yearly.
4-East was also recognized as the "Heroes of the Year" twice. Any nurse can take care of any patient, but not every nurse can care for an oncology patient. The compassion that 4-East staff gives to patients is priceless.
The 4-E unit, in addition, prepared a wedding and a baptism for a 47-year-old cancer patient in 2023. They help the couple solidify their love for one another in the presence of a Catholic priest at a ceremony in the Inpatient Oncology Nursing Unit at Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center. The couple were officially married in the Catholic Church after being together more than 20 years and were blessed to be reconnected profoundly with their faith following the patient's recent hospitalizations. The wedding ceremony was attended by close family, friends, and nurses caring for him. The event was then followed by the baptism of their two younger sons, 7 and 9.
The 4-East team's commitment to continuous improvement is unwavering. They have demonstrated exceptional teamwork and excellence in their efforts to decrease HAPIs in the unit. Their compliance, passion, and effort towards this goal are commendable. They've implemented interventions and a charting regimen and have held each other accountable for turning patients every 2 hours to promote learning and quality care. The 4-East team has excellent data to back up their improvement on this project. Regarding patient/family-centered care, 4-East commits to sending each discharged patient a personalized letter of thanks and best wishes. The unit's care for both its med-surg and oncology patients is a testament to their dedication to making them comfortable and happy.
