This team has been caring for a cognitively delayed, autistic young man for nearly six months. This patient has been challenging behaviorally, has assaulted staff numerous times, and has been rough on the physical environment around him. Despite the many difficulties this patient has presented to the staff, they have consistently shown an incredible amount of compassion for him as they work hard to understand him, communicate with him, maintain his dignity, and, above all, keep him safe.

The outpouring of love for this patient has been truly a joy to witness. Staff have researched how to help him on their own time, have brought him toys, movies, pizza, treats, and clothes, have set up picture boards for him, have spent time walking with him, and truly lean into his needs even when it puts their own safety at risk.

Today is an emotional day as we prepare to discharge him to what will hopefully be his forever home. There is a lot of fear of the unknown, and concern about what his future holds. There are staff members coming in on their day off to ensure that this is a smooth transition for him. Though everyone knows that this is not the place for him, there is also comfort in knowing that he is here and safe.

Nursing Theorist Dr. Jean Watson said, “Nurses are a unique kind. They have this insatiable need to care for others, which is both their biggest strength and fatal flaw.” We are struggling with that fatal flaw today. Please recognize this team for their incredible caring.
