Every single day, this team shows up with an unwavering commitment to caring for their patients and families. On a high-paced, fast-turnover surgical unit, where the demands are constant, and the acuity is real, they lead with compassion, professionalism, and heart. Their patients are not simply cases or room numbers, they are individuals and families navigating vulnerable moments and this team meets them with empathy, patience, and dignity.
Despite an incredibly busy year, the 5 East team has consistently met and exceeded their customer service goals month after month, earning distinguished recognition for their dedication to the patient experience. Their commitment to service excellence is not performative; it is embedded in their culture. They listen. They educate. They reassure. They advocate.
What makes this team truly extraordinary is their response to challenge.
In Fiscal Year 2025, the unit experienced 16 hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs). Rather than accept this as a reality of a busy surgical floor, the team leaned in. They reflected, identified areas of opportunity, implemented a focused prevention process, and strengthened accountability around skin assessments and high-risk patient interventions. Through teamwork, vigilance, and shared ownership, they achieved a remarkable outcome — reducing their HAPIs from 16 to only one HAPI. That level of improvement is not accidental. It is the result of collaboration, commitment, and a refusal to compromise on quality.
Their quality metrics are outstanding. Their safety practices are intentional. Their accountability to one another is evident.
Beyond the clinical excellence, this team embodies what it means to truly work together. They support one another through heavy admissions, complex cases, and emotionally demanding shifts. They mentor new staff. They uplift each other during difficult times. They have even extended their camaraderie beyond the walls of the hospital — organizing pickleball and badminton games and social activities to strengthen their bond and combat burnout. This speaks volumes about their culture of connection and resilience.
Their teamwork has not only improved patient outcomes — it has reduced staff turnover and strengthened retention. They have created an environment where people want to stay, grow, and serve.
The 5 East General Surgery Team exemplifies the spirit of the DAISY Award: clinical excellence, compassionate care, collaboration, and extraordinary dedication to patients and families.
They do not just work side by side. They rise together. They improve together. They care together.
For their measurable quality outcomes, their commitment to patient-centered care, and their unwavering teamwork in the face of challenge, the 5 East General Surgery Team is truly a DAISY Team.
