My wife and I were in town for a 4 day Christmas vacation, and I broke my leg on our 1st morning in town. I was transported by ambulance to UMC and found out I had a broken left tibia and fibula that needed surgery. Upon my admission, I found out that I tested positive for COVID and that my wife would not be able to stay with me or visit me after the surgery. I was alone and in the hospital for Christmas and New Year's. I was a patient at UMC for 15 days. Although depressed and dejected, I was well taken care of by the entire care team from the dietary team to the Clinical Director on this Unit.

Thank you, everybody, especially the staff, therapists, and doctors who took care of me since day one. Thank you for the encouragement especially for getting me up with meals three times a day and helping me walk around to strengthen my legs. Thank you for the TLC and the patience of all the staff who took care of me. I will miss everybody.

I cannot thank the Nurses enough! Keep Being Great! Thank you to all the staff that helped me in this process. It was my first time staying in a hospital for so long, so I was scared at first. But because of the caring and kind nurses that worked here, it felt a lot easier. Thanks to everyone for making me feel good and hopeful about my recovery and giving me a lot of attention and help with whatever I needed. Not only do I have a new appreciation for my feet, but also have a new appreciation for you nurses because, without your good energy and work ethic, most patients would give up and feel bad about themselves. But being here showed me a lot and I am truly grateful for this staff and all nurses. Thank you for being the Best!!

A self-driven unit to provide its patients with quality care. As a county hospital that receives a significant number of homeless or low-socioeconomic status, many are often admitted to the hospital with clothing cut off or destroyed during the emergent situation. After identifying that many of these patients lacked basic clothing needs, the UBC established a clothing drive initiative to assist those patients in need. Through their collection of donated or store-bought clothes, the staff ensured that these patients felt valued and cared for by their unit. As a result of this initiative, other units soon found out by word of mouth and began to donate to grow their clothing collections for our patients further.
