Recently, our entire 5R team worked tirelessly and compassionately to care for a particular patient, JA, for over 30 days, in that time, developing a fondness for this gentleman who was ultimately dying. I would particularly like to recognize the team who cared for him in the moments leading up to his passing, which was dignified and peaceful thanks to their incredible care. I would first and foremost like to recognize Jessie, the Charge Nurse on that day, who exemplified exactly what it means to "know me, care for me, ease my way." Over the weeks of caring for JA, she learned what made JA, JA. She learned that he loved to listen to Guns and Roses and could communicate with him in ways others could not, which was difficult given his disease process. When it was finally determined that he would be moving towards comfort measures, Jessie helped connect with his daughter, with whom he had an interesting relationship and hadn't seen recently, but who was the one person he wanted to hold on to before he let go. When she learned that his daughter had no money to travel from Salem to her father's bedside, Jessie worked to get her a bus ticket so she could make it here to say goodbye. When JA saw his daughter, his smile and her tears said it all. I know without a doubt that having lost her own father recently, Jessie understood just how vital it was to connect these two one last time. Jessie, along with JA's direct care nurse Denise, the RT Jenn and his hospitalist Dr. Rankin did not leave JA's side when the decision was made to remove his Bipap and titrate down his oxygen. As a team, they worked tirelessly to assess his comfort as he made the transition from coherent and alive to leaving this earth within the hour. He was able to face time with family, make amends, and die comfortably while having his daughter at his side and Guns and Roses playing. I am so incredibly honored to collaborate with these incredible team members who demonstrate the highest level of compassion and care in their work every day.
