All the staff members take turns to keep this patient occupied, whether it be spending some time in his room watching TV or taking him for walks around the unit/hospital and a trip for a cup of coffee.
I would like to nominate the 6 Main nursing staff for their tireless care of a challenging patient who has been hospitalized for over 200 days. I recently joined the 6 Main team and have been amazed at the patience and care they provide to a patient who can become easily frustrated, agitated, and difficult to care for. Despite all these challenges, the staff have embraced this patient and made him part of their 6 Main family. All the staff members take turns to keep this patient occupied, whether it be spending some time in his room watching TV or taking him for walks around the unit/hospital and a trip for a cup of coffee. Staff know when they have this patient, they are not alone and it is a team effort. Recently, over the Holidays, staff decorated the patient’s room and purchased gifts for the patient. To help make this patient's Holiday more special, unit leadership reached out to the Passavant Foundation and shared this patient’s story, so they graciously donated a $100 gift card for the unit to purchase gifts for the patient to present him on Christmas. RN Rita Parry shopped for Christmas presents and multiple other staff bought this patient gifts with their own money to make not only Christmas more special, but his Birthday that followed just a few short days after. Although the holiday and birthday celebrations are over, staff continue to bring this patient special surprises and treats to keep him comfortable and happy, including his favorite foods, drinks, and additional comfort items like clothing and blankets. In addition, the staff take turns doing this patient's laundry weekly despite how busy they all are. Now that I have been with this unit for about 2 months, I have seen a major transformation in this patient. He is calmer and more comfortable in an uncomfortable situation due to the caring and compassion all the staff on 6 Main provide on a day-to-day/shift-to-shift basis. In all my years of nursing, I have never had a situation where a patient has needed to be in the hospital for such a long length, but I continue to be amazed and humbled by the care the 6 Main team provides to this patient who has now become part of their family.
