Monday began like any other day in the 6N ICU. At approximately 0900 that a.m., there was a distraught family member crying as she walked down the hall towards the waiting room. It was a family member of our patient in room X. The patient recently suffered a major brain breed. His daughter, the crying woman I had seen in the hall just moments ago was to be married in 1.5 weeks. The patient’s daughter had confided in Taylor Straube, the patient’s primary nurse, that she was very sad for her father however was additionally distraught because she had always thought her father would walk her down the aisle at her wedding. A short while later, Taylor asked her manager, “can we do a wedding here?” After a discussion, they deiced that of course, we could have a wedding if that is what the daughter wanted. Taylor asked her when she would like the wedding to happen and she responded “today, I don’t want my dad to suffer any longer than necessary.” From there, the wedding planning took off. Phone calls were made. The Chaplain, Nina Redl came up and worked closely with Taylor getting flowers donated from the gift shop, thanks to Jenny Brown (gift shop manager). Paige, Taylor, and Jenny made boutonnieres for the groom and our patient, the father of the bride. A phone call was made to the kitchen. Chef Nazim whipped up some beautiful pastries for the bride, groom, and guests to enjoy after the wedding. One nurse ran home on her 15 minute break to get bobby pins and a curling iron to help the bride get ready. The rest of the staff on 6N ensured that all of our patients were well cared for while several of the staff focused on the wedding. The wedding took place outside on a beautifully cool day, in front of the Bryan House that afternoon. There is a sidewalk that leads up to the Bryan house so Taylor was able to push the patient in his bed down the sidewalk while his daughter held his hand and walked beside his bed. This is certainly not the wedding that his daughter had envisioned or the way she had dreamt of being walked down the aisle by her father however, it was a wedding where her father was able to present. At that moment, that was all that mattered. The entire staff on 6N that day participated in some way. Some nurses cared for the other nurses’ patients so they could help organize and be present during the wedding. After the wedding was over, the bride mentioned to Taylor that she recalled attending meetings in the Bryan House years as a little girl with her father. Her father was on the hospital board a long time ago and she would tag along. How ironic that the two of them would share such a special day together in front of the Bryan house.
