Role Model Compassionate Care:
I am writing to nominate the 7-3 Neuroscience and Medical specialty Nursing team for the DAISY Award in recognition of their outstanding commitment to providing exceptional care to our patients, specifically in the case of L. L is a 9-year-old girl, who was admitted to 7-3 Neuroscience and medical specialty for the past 8 months from May 2023 to December 2023. Her parents, sister, and twin brother reside in their nearby home and visit her weekly. Her diagnoses include rapid-onset obesity with hypoventilation, hypothalamic dysfunction, and autonomic dysregulation (ROHHAD) syndrome, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). This combination of ROHHAD, ASD, and DMDD has led to complex medical needs and behavioral issues, including - but not limited to - seizures, stringent control over diet and fluid intake, and behaviors including hitting, biting, disrobing, coprophagia, and regurgitation/rumination. The compassion, empathy, and dedication displayed by this team have truly made a positive impact on the well-being of our patient and their family.
The 7-3 Neuroscience and Medical specialty Nursing team Members consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to delivering compassionate care in their daily interactions with L. Their collective efforts and individual contributions have gone above and beyond the call of duty, creating an environment of healing, understanding, support, and empathy for our patient.
Special Connection:
In the case of L, the compassionate care provided by the team was particularly noteworthy. From the moment of admission, the team members made it their priority to ensure that the patient and their family felt valued, respected, and supported throughout their journey. They consistently showed empathy and understanding in all their interactions, going the extra mile to provide emotional support, comfort, and personalized care.
Significant Difference:
One specific example that highlights the team's compassionate care was the implementation of Proactive Measures that predicted, prevented and prepared ways to address the dangerous and maladaptive behaviors displayed by the patient.
Staff were able to adapt to the unique behavioral interventions needed to manage this patient’s diagnosis despite not being psychiatric nurses. The team created a personalized care plan that addressed the patient's unique needs in conjunction with the physician team and unit leadership. The team implemented unique Safety Protocols to promote a safe environment for L and her staff. Proactive measures that may be considered are wearing jean jackets and/or arm guards.
Furthermore, the 7-3 team exemplified the values of compassionate care by fostering open communication, engaged in active listening, and demonstrating a genuine interest in the patient's well-being. They embraced a holistic approach to care, considering not only the patient's medical needs but also their emotional and psychological welfare.
The impact of the team's compassionate care extended beyond the patient to their family members, who were deeply touched by the level of support and understanding they received during a challenging time. The team's efforts not only improved the patient's experience but also contributed to the overall healing process and emotional well-being of the entire family.
