The 8E Surgery Team works together to deliver compassionate care and clinical excellence under the leadership of Ed Zettl. The staff on 8E functions as a cohesive, coordinated unit, and this is reflected in the outstanding care their patients receive every day.

Since 2024, the 8E team has earned five DAISY Awards, demonstrating excellence in nursing and clinical practice. In addition, since January 2026 alone, they have received 12 patient nominations, each highlighting the meaningful impact the team has on the patient experience.

Patients frequently describe the 8E staff as compassionate, kind, competent, attentive, calm, empathetic, and strong advocates. They are relentless in advocating for each patient, often caring for multiple individuals while still making every patient feel like they are the only one. They treat patients and their visitors like family and focus on caring for the whole person, not just the symptoms.

8E is the nursing department that represents our experts for chemotherapy administration. They have committed to continuous skill development for the nursing team and will go to other nursing units to administer and monitor patients requiring this service. With the addition of Ophthalmology services provided at UPMC Mercy in the Pavilion, a dedicated nursing unit was necessary to care for patients receiving autologous eye drops. The team on 8E embraced this patient population. These qualities consistently shine through during some of the most stressful and vulnerable moments in a patient’s life. The team’s ability to bring peace, comfort, and reassurance, while expertly managing complex clinical needs, has made a meaningful and lasting difference for countless patients and their families.

The 8E team’s impact extends beyond bedside care. They developed medication education cards that are readily available to help patients and families better understand prescribed medications. This innovative tool has been so effective that many other units across UPMC Mercy have adopted it as a best practice.

The 8E Surgery Team operates like a well-oiled machine, supportive, patient-centered, and deeply committed to providing the highest quality of care for patients and their families.
