One of our patients went to surgery and died unexpectedly during the procedure. Niki Wehmeyer and Allison Dudley stayed with Mrs. G for more than four hours while she learned that her husband would not go home with her. They cried with her as she said goodbye to her husband and waited for her sister to come and take her home. Erica Ferguson, Alwia Said and Laura Milburn took care of Niki & Allison's patients so they could give Mrs. G their undivided attention. Adel Austin put aside all of the things she had to do and patiently walked Allison and Patrick through the necessary clinical steps for the end of life.
It doesn't happen like this most of the time, but on Wednesday, we were blessed with a day and staffing that allowed our two nurses to give the absolute best nursing care to Mrs. G on what will be remembered as her worst day. She may not remember the outstanding care that Niki & Allison gave her or know that Erica, Alwia, Laura and the whole 8th floor team stretched to make that happen. But I do. I will put this day in my memory bank of one of my greatest nursing memories. Thank you to all of you.
