The staff of 9 & 10 Thompson transformed into one of the first designated COVID-19 units at Jefferson. In the beginning of this transition, all staff members were nervous and anxious. Detailed information on new policies, unique procedures, and varying recommendations on appropriate protective equipment came flooding in within the first hours of admitting our first COVID-19 patients. Looking back it seems as if it all happened in a blink of an eye.
During this hectic time, rather than crumble under the fear of COVID-19, the staff stepped up to the task. In uncertain and unprecedented times, each member of the 9 & 10 Thompson Team made the decision to aid and heal our patients. They helped each other don and doff protective personal equipment thousands of times. They learned to run codes while receiving advice and direction via FaceTime from physicians outside of the room. The doors will remain closed in order to prevent further transmission of the virus. They pushed off a much-needed dinner or bathroom break to help set up a Zoom or a FaceTime meeting with the family members of a patient.
The comradery of this unit reinforces the notion that there is always a helping hand, someone to look to for guidance on 9 &10 Thompson. The teamwork has engendered an environment of positivity. The staff made the fight against COVID-19 a priority. Even with the ever-changing, unpredictable twists and turns of this pandemic, they will constantly remain the same - the remarkable teamwork, compassion, empathy, and work ethic of the staff on 9 & 10 Thompson. They deserve to be recognized for their kind manner and professionalism, exceptional care, and team work. They exceeded the challenges and stress that the COVID-19 pandemic bought to the unit. This team has a special heart. They are indeed a DAISY Team.
