Recently the ED had a patient present to triage who was a victim of human trafficking. She was fearful to come to the hospital, but knew she needed emergency medical treatment. Once the patient agreed to be seen, Aaron was the nurse assigned to care for her. Aaron listened to the patient's various stories and accounts of the ordeal that she had experienced as a victim of horrific events. The patient had shared that she had thrown away evidence that would identify one of the people harming her, so Aaron went to the garbage to retrieve the item and called Metro to get the evidence. Aaron watched the patient's mental trauma play out as the sounds of the ED environment became too much for her. He provided her with a therapeutic environment and a therapeutic ear to the best of his ability. Aaron also started the process of reaching out to a company that helps victims of human trafficking, so that she could have resources when her day for discharge came. Aaron was meant to be the nurse caring for this patient on that day and provided the compassionate care that this young woman deserved, needed, and had been without for a significantly long time.
