My 99-year-old grandfather was admitted through the Emergency Room. Words like "delirium" and "sun-downing" were used but not fully explained. He was very agitated when we arrived, and we had been his sitter most nights at the hospital. Aaron came in on the day shift and was concerned about the level of pain my grandfather might be in. He asked us about it, and we explained his wishes of no narcotics as it gave him war flashbacks. He assured us we could start on a low dose and see how he would do. Sure enough, he calmed down and looked much more comfortable.
Aaron explained many things that we didn't understand. He checked on my grandfather often to keep him comfortable and was a wonderful advocate for him, balancing his comfort and what we were comfortable with. He was the first person to say, "He is in pain and it's not OK." I can't even tell him thank you enough for helping us to understand what was happening and advocating for my grandfather.
