A patient with cancer had to visit the Infusion Center frequently for blood transfusions and developed a special relationship with Abbey. He was recently told he had no further treatment options and cancer would take his life. Abbey likes to skydive, one of the topics she and this patient talked about often. Upon hearing his devastating news, she set the patient up with the experience of a lifetime.
Abbey got a whole skydiving team (pilot, tandem jumper, videographer, others) to donate their time and talents so the patient could experience a tandem jump. Abbey and her friend (also a nurse) met the patient and his wife at the site. Abbey went up in the plane with the patient and tandem jumper while the other nurse waited on the ground with his wife. The whole jump was videotaped and when the patient landed, he said to Abbey and the jump crew, "You gave a dead man a dream." Abbey shared the video and pictures with me, and it made me cry to see the lengths she went to in order to set up an incredible experience for a man with a terminal disease. If this isn't above and beyond extraordinary care, then I don't know what is!
