Abbey most recently has been caring for a patient with a difficult personality and significant symptom burden. The patient was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that was hard to pinpoint. Due to the unknown aspect of the disease, the treatment necessary and the associated pain, this patient had an extremely difficult time adjusting to all that was required of him mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Abbey worked with the patient to gain his trust and the trust of his wife while she helped him cope while he was here and during the shifts Abbey was not working. The patient asked that Abbey be his nurse when he was in the hospital and she was always willing to do so. Abbey acted as a patient advocate and requested medications in order to keep the patient comfortable. When the patient's wife sat with Palliative Medicine to discuss his treatment Abbey was included as an integral part of the patient's plan and care team. During leader rounding, the patient would refer to Abbey as his adopted daughter.
After a short few weeks, the patient and his wife made the decision to go to hospice. The patient passed peacefully at Delnor.
I have had the privilege of working with Abbey in the care of other patients and her excellence is obvious in their care as well. I feel Abbey goes above and beyond in the care of her patients and this is an example of how compassionate, empathetic and dedicated to the Patients First Mission Abbey is.
