Abbie Johnson, BSN, RN, CWON

Johnson is a nurse in the CMH-OHSU Health General Surgery Clinic, where she works in wound care and was recognized for her professionalism, dedication, and compassion. The clinic manager, a social worker, and a patient nominated her for the DAISY Award.

Abbie consistently demonstrates a holistic approach to patient care, going beyond physical health needs to consider the full scope of factors that may impact healing. She thoughtfully anticipates and addresses cultural, socioeconomic, and mental health concerns that could affect a patient’s ability to follow their care plan or achieve optimal outcomes. This insight and compassion highlight Abbie’s deep commitment to patient-centered care and her ability to advocate effectively for each individual's unique needs. Her awareness and proactive approach make her an invaluable asset to both patients and the care team.

Abbie continuously provides excellent patient-centered, trauma-informed care. As a wound care nurse, she frequently sees patients other health care providers label as "difficult" and "non-compliant." Abbie meets these patients where they are in their health care journey by providing care in a non-judgmental manner, recognizing the positive changes they are making even when small, and providing education regarding their health care in ways they are able to understand.

Abbie recently provided care to a houseless patient with significant leg wounds. He shared embarrassment regarding his hygiene and the smell from his wounds. Abbie listened empathetically and normalized his experience. She provided compassionate, professional care and called social work to help address his needs while he was in the clinic.
