Abbie is a picture perfect example of what one thinks of when they think of a nurse. She is a happy, positive, loving, caring, compassionate person in her everyday life and those qualities translate easily into her career as a nurse on 10North. From my office, I can hear her sweet and cheerful voice talking with the patients, explaining their care, outlining a plan and always hear either the smile in her voice or the concern depending on the patient and the situation. She is beyond patient and never lets on to the patient or the families if she is frustrated, tired, or even hypoglycemic! (You know nurses put themselves last and often run on empty!)
Not only does Abbie shine at the bedside, but she is such an asset to her team. She can be counted on to support them and have their back and if the going gets tough, you can believe she is at your side to see you through. She asked leadership if she could throw a Christmas in July party for the unit last year, to give everyone a boost in the middle of a difficult time on our unit. If you come by 10N, it is usually decorated for the season. Abbie has a hand in the creativity, as a morale boost for the staff and a bit of fun. She made Valentines gifts for each of the patients.
Abbie is proactive in her professional development and readily seeks out opportunities to grow and be challenged. She was our Magnet Champion and is now asking to join the Rewards and Recognitions committee, which she would be great at. Abbie truly embodies what a nurse at UT Southwestern should look like, through our Guiding Principles and PACT standards and was just honored at the GOLD PACT luncheon this month. Thank you, Abbie, for all that you do.
