Abby came up with the idea to "bring her a cake" as the following day was the patient's birthday. This quickly grew and with Abby’s suggestion, we were able to involve EMS and the patient was able to meet the Medic and Nurse that helped save her life.
If there is anything we’ve mastered between EMS, the ER, and the Cath team – it’s handling the STEMI like second nature. Together we smash goals. The facts about survival are grim; but we give everyone a fair chance. Time is heart muscle, and we not only aim to save lives but to preserve cardiac muscle function. Coming from a mom whose only son was resuscitated at birth, I love reading the success stories we get. This team makes me so proud.

A patient faced a life-threatening cardiac event. What began as a routine afternoon nap, quickly escalated into a fight for survival. The patient awoke with severe chest pain and the feeling that something was very wrong. Paramedics and EMS quickly arrived at the patient’s home and confirmed she was suffering from a heart attack. As soon as the ambulance began the journey to Methodist Germantown, the patient suddenly started going into cardiac arrest. Upon arrival at the ER the dedicated team took over providing immediate and intensive care to stabilize the patient before taking her to the cardiac catheterization lab. The coordination between EMS and the hospital staff was flawless, a testament to their preparedness and dedication to patient care.

After the STEMI was transported to the Cath lab and then the floor, Abby Fowler would reach out daily to check on the patient. The evening of discharge, Abby came up with the idea to "bring her a cake" as the following day was the patient's birthday. This quickly grew and with Abby’s suggestion, we were able to involve EMS and the patient was able to meet the Medic and Nurse that helped save her life. It was Abby's day off, but she still made time to celebrate this huge victory for this patient. Abby is the epitome of care and compassion. She upholds the organization's values and even though the patient was long discharged from the ED, she continued to check on this patient. Genuine care! She then came on her day off to celebrate with this patient. This is a testament to her devotion and character. MLH is blessed beyond measure to have a Nurse like Abby.
