Lutheran Hospital recently cared for a gentleman who tragically lost his sister during his hospital stay. To make this sad story worse, the sister’s funeral was planned while he was still a high-needs patient here. Abby, a nurse supervisor on our Neuro-Spine unit, refused to let his hospital stay keep him from his sister’s funeral. On her day off, Abby came in and worked to make sure he was cleaned up and dressed up for the memorial. She also worked to make sure the patient, who required constant medical monitoring, had the equipment needed to keep him safe. Thanks to Abby, this patient was able to go out of town to send his sister off. “Abby exemplifies the true compassion and empathy of the nursing profession and we wanted her to be recognized.” her nomination stated, “She is a true gem of Lutheran Hospital!”
