Abby held me, and through my pouring tears, she talked me down.
I had many great nurses during my stay at Baptist Hardin, Abby, however, was extraordinary. Her care and compassion, combined with her sense of humor and bedside manner is what pulled me through my time in the ICU.
I have anxiety and MDD, so having an unexpected STEMI at 41 years old was a lot to take in, to say the least. It was Abby’s awesome care and conversation that helped keep my depression to a minimum and under control. I had thoughts in my head of knowing that going into surgery could have been the last time I saw or spoke to my children, this really took an emotional toll on my mental health.
At this time, I was unaware that I would need another surgery to place a 2nd stent. Abby was the nurse who told me and explained why a second stent was needed and what to expect. This information on top of all I had just gone through, was still on my mind. I was trying to heal along with another upcoming surgery and the fear of saying goodbye to my family again sent me into a full-blown panic attack. Abby held me, and through my pouring tears, she talked me down. She pulled and held my hair back from my tear-ridden face. She rubbed my back and held me, I truly needed someone to comfort me during this time. Just writing this brings tears to my eyes. I am a private person. I felt comfortable enough with Abby to share my fears and show my most vulnerable side.
Abby stayed with me as well as did extra checks on me throughout her shift. She also let the oncoming shift know what I was going through to ensure that I would be okay when she left. Abby is a blessing not only to the hospital but to our community. Her love for nursing and helping others shines through. Her empathy for the patient is unsurpassed. She is truly considerate and compassionate. I would not have made it through mentally, emotionally, or physically without her care. Her pep talks have stuck with me and continue to help me even since I have been home. Abby deserves The DAISY Award to be recognized for the amazing nurse that she is. She is by far the best nurse I have ever encountered.
