Every nurse that cared for my mother was skillful. We appreciate all they did for my mother. Abby was special. She showed genuine concern and understanding. She listened carefully to what we needed to express and acted accordingly. She took the time to patiently explain difficult medical terms and conditions and showed kindness and compassion 100% of the time. Abby was always pleasant she was also consistently attentive to my mother’s needs and requested follow-up from other units taking the initiative instead of waiting for things to happen. For example, my mother was on Vapotherm for several days. After a while, my mother’s O2 levels were stable. One day she noticed the nasal cannula had drifted down to the upper lip and the O2 sat was 94%. She immediately called the pulmonary dept to reevaluate. That day my mother was taken off Vapotherm and placed on regular O2. My mother’s condition has improved greatly since. That was only one example of Abby’s excellent care. Another example was when my mother was about to be discharged. I approached Abby with concerns about my mother being d/c without any oxygen. The Pulmonary assessment showed her O2 levels remained stable during activity. However, afterward, she would struggle to recover. I felt the pulmonary tech did not wait around long enough to see her struggle. I asked Abby to please look into it and she did and the attending MC wrote a prescription for my mother. I felt better knowing we would have O2 handy in the event my mother needed some assistance with her O2 levels. We all know COVID is a wicked disease. Medical expertise is important, without a doubt. However, with so many uncertainties related to the virus, I felt that compassion, understanding, and really listening are paramount in a patient's care. We cannot thank Abby enough for the outstanding treatment she provided to my mother. The “Healthcare Hero’s” title does not do her justice. She “gets it” and she strives to provide that above and beyond attention to her patients and their families.
