Abigail was taking care of a patient in the ICU who was diagnosed with metastatic cancer. He was in a lot of pain and in constant distress. She advocated for the palliative care team to see the patient and family. The family was very hesitant to initiate palliative care because they thought that meant giving up on their family member. Because of Abie’s commitment and care for her patient, she educated the family and patient on palliative care. Later that day, the patient agreed to be seen by palliative. They were able to discuss the goals of care and help the patient with his pain management. The family was so grateful to get clarity on palliative care and see their family member more comfortable.
