Abby stood beside me and supported me when I told the on-call OB that I would like to finish our original plan before we made any decisions or changes
Although Abby wasn't our delivery nurse, my husband and I both credit her for our smooth labor and delivery experience with our first baby in December 2024. My primary OB was not able to be at the hospital during this time, so I was followed by one of her colleagues. My labor had slowed down after beginning an epidural and I required Pitocin to continue making progress. The on-call OB, Nurse Abby, my husband, and I made a plan that we would try Pitocin for 4 hours and recheck my progress at that time. However, the OB came in at 2 hours and began to tell me I needed a c-section and that baby wasn't going to fit, despite my primary OB being very confident that wouldn't even be a remote concern for us (estimated weight 7 lbs). Abby stood beside me and supported me when I told the on-call OB that I would like to finish our original plan before we made any decisions or changes, especially because I had absolutely no risk factors (i.e. prolonged rupture, temp, abnormal strip, etc) to consider a c-section at that time. The OB was outwardly and obviously annoyed and inconvenienced by my strong stance and Abby advocating for me (as well as multiple other L&D nurses working that night). We continued with the original plan, and by the end of the next 2 hours, I had progressed quickly and was at 8cm. Very shortly after shift change our baby boy was delivered at 7 lbs 5.5 oz. Had Abby not stood her ground beside me and supported my decision we would have had an unnecessary surgery. Abby is an exceptional advocate and support for her patients. She was the perfect nurse for us!.
