Abby was instrumental in my ultimate recovery when I was transferred from the ED to the ICU. I was developing sepsis and had several complicating conditions which led to a serious deteriorating status. I was intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation and had a myriad of medications administered via IV. In addition, I was developing pneumonia which led to respiratory failure. My family was advised that things were not progressing in a positive fashion and any further deterioration could be fatal. After a short time (24-36 hours) things did get worse, my family was advised to prepare for the worse possible outcome and a priest was called. At the same time, my daughters' boarding school in CT was contacted about the situation, she was excused. Her mother drove down and back (9hrs) to get her to CMMC.
It is during this time, according to my family, that Abby stayed at my bedside monitoring IVs and providing ventilation all while providing my family with condition updates. They said her level of professionalism was outstanding considering the grave situation. At no time did she waver in showing emotion, either positive or negative, which was very reassuring to my family. One of my sisters said she doesn't remember Abby even taking a break during the critical time. "A true professional" she stated. I have the same sentiments. My daughter made it to the bedside and thanks to Abby she didn't have to say good-bye. I guess if you had to say I owe my life to this outstanding CMMC nurse you would be right.
Because of Abby's compassion, I signed on as a volunteer and hope to get a chance to meet her to thank her in person. Abby is a great nurse!
