A patient in the HVPCU was scheduled for emergent cardiac surgery. Her daughter's wedding was the upcoming weekend but she wanted to have the wedding before her mom went into surgery. At 6pm Abby Rudy VP of Nursing for Adult Critical Care, was contacted to assist with removing barriers to resources that would allow the team to hold a wedding for the family. Abby sacrificed time with her own family to stay late to make calls and connections to secure the chapel for the wedding ceremony, a conference room for the reception, Patient Experience resources for catering, flowers, and a wedding cake. The family was able to hold a wedding ceremony the following morning, complete with a full bridal party in wedding attire and all the associated celebrations. Without Abby's selfless sacrifice and dedication to ensuring the holistic care of our patients, this event would not have been possible. Abby is the true embodiment of patient/family-centered care and is fully deserving of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.
