Abril approached me in such a fresh, engaging way. She was there for me. She kept asking if there was anything she could do to make me more confident, comfortable, and safe.
Recently, my mom had a toe amputated. It was not the expected outcome for a simple sore toe that brought my mom to the ER four days prior. As I sat in a hospital room at St. Vincent's with my mom after her surgery, we both wavered between relief that the surgery was behind us and shock that the toe had to be amputated. We were like mummies trying to navigate the next steps forward. That's where Abril comes in. The moment she walked in the door and greeted me, I knew we were in good hands. She had a kind, friendly personality, but you could tell she knew what she was doing. In previous hospital stays, my siblings and I often had to advocate on behalf of my Mom for certain care, but this was my first experience where Abril was an advocate for my Mom before we even knew what she needed. She was right on my mom's pain management and provided lots of options to keep the pain under control. She reassured my Mom, who is not a fan of medicine, of the importance of controlling the pain so her body could heal. Abril took time to patiently answer all of our questions and she often said, "I messaged the doctor about..." to make sure my mom's care was progressing in the right direction. She spent the whole day with us and helped my mom navigate getting in and out of bed without putting pressure on her foot. When we thanked her over and over for her kind care, Abril stated that she knew from personal experience how valuable a nurse is when loved ones are in the hospital. When I asked my mom what she remembered about having Abril as a nurse, her face lit up. "Abril approached me in such a fresh, engaging way. She was there for me. She kept asking if there was anything she could do to make me more confident, comfortable, and safe. Abril wasn't preoccupied with other things when she came into my room. She was present; she never seemed in a hurry. She made me feel like I was her only patient, which I know was not the case." Having Abril as a nurse, that first day out of surgery set us off on the right path. My mom was in the hospital a few days post-surgery, and we never saw Abril again, but I will never forget Abril's kindness, professionalism, compassion, and confidence in her care of my mother. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Abril! Patients are lucky to be in your care!
