In early March our 89-year-old mother was admitted to the ICU at Portsmouth Medical after a stroke/fall. She had had her share of falls, unfortunately. She had Alzheimer’s and forgot constantly that she needed assistance with just about everything, especially walking and balancing herself. Her stay lasted several long days. We sat with her every day and we prayed she would get better. When word came that mom was not improving we were all devastated. The whole ICU unit was so gracious and so patient with our very large family. Then there was Adam. Adam was mom's primary nurse during her stay. What a sweetheart. There wasn’t anything Adam didn’t do to make our mother comfortable. Never mind us, her 13 grieving children. He went above and beyond answering continuous questions of confusion and concern. He took a much-needed walk and even prayed with one of my sisters when duty called. Adam even offered up hugs to anyone in need. I’m pretty certain Adam touched all of our hearts in different ways. For me personally, it was the way he encouraged and allowed us to help him care for our mother for one last time. Everything but not short of bathing her and dressing her. Adam left a huge impression on us. He was heaven-sent when we needed him most. He is truly an extraordinary human being but most importantly an amazing nurse. We will forever be grateful!
