M is a 42-year-old woman with a history of chronic medical conditions and treatments. She was transferred to SICU following complications from a surgical procedure. The transfer to an intensive care unit proved to be a major stressor for M, causing feelings of loss and defeat. She stopped eating and refused care until one night she decided to give in and work with a member of the nursing team, Adrian Dris.
Nurse Adrian provided a high quality of care such that M eventually complied with his request and has since improved her quality of life. He encouraged her to lift her spirits while continuing to respect her decision to avoid care. His calm and compassionate demeanor was what she needed to get the strength to push through her pain and despair. Adrian provided a listening ear for me and other family members as we were coming to terms with her decision to refuse care.
Adrian is a kind and compassionate nurse. He should be recognized for his outstanding commitment to patient and family care at Holy Cross Hospital.
