I arrived at SRMC for my [second] knee replacement, my left knee. We arrived at 8:30 AM to prep for surgery at 10:30. Unfortunately, the first patient [of the day] required more attention so I did not get operated on until about 2:00 PM. I don't remember much till I was in [my hospital room] around 5:00 or 6:00 pm, my husband with me.
Adrian came in along with the [previous nurse]. They introduced themselves and Adrian let us know that he would be on for the night. He then returned with two trays of food [because] we had missed mealtime, but he knew we would be hungry. We both were!
Next was the test; since I had not been seen by PT I was given the option of a bedpan or the commode. Ok, [this] 69-year-old female did not want a male nurse having to push a bedpan under her, so we agreed to try the commode if I did not step on the ground [with my surgical knee]. The first one or two times I was a little clumsy, but we adjusted so I could slide off the bed and onto the commode and leave my leg on the bed. It worked and I felt more comfortable going to the bathroom.
It was a long night with my waking up three or four times having the bed changed because I sat wrong and pulled the tub from the gizmo catching the excess blood. Luckily, I did not freak out! And it only took a minute to clean me and the bed up (sitting on the commode with my leg propped up). The last time I rang for help Adrian helped me move over and then was going to [excuse] himself while I peed. At that point I let him know that thank you to him and his gentlemanly behavior. I had lost all shame and appreciated all his help! Thank you for being there for me at a vulnerable time and for being such a gentlemanly nurse!
