1st Nomination
AJ was working the evening when an OB trauma came into our NorthBay ED. AJ responded to the call for assistance and stayed with the mother while our amazing trauma team worked diligently to try to stabilize her.
The woman had been crossing the street while pushing her 2-year-old in a stroller. Tragically, an oncoming vehicle was coming towards the mother and child, and, with seconds to spare, she was able to push her child’s stroller safely out of the path of the vehicle. Unfortunately, the mother sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to NorthBay. Upon her arrival, she had no identification. Without knowing who this woman was, it was obvious she was pregnant and appeared to be close to term. Sadly, due to the impact of the vehicle, this unidentified mother had experienced a late-term pregnancy loss.
AJ accompanied this woman to the main OR, with members of WCS and trauma coming together to care for her. The baby was delivered via cesarean so the trauma team could begin their life-saving interventions. The next day at work, AJ checked to see how the patient was doing. The concern she had for this woman was evident on her face. While reviewing patients on our OB High Risk list the next day, we were able to piece together a possible identification. AJ called the emergency contact listed in the patient's chart, and a gentleman answered. He only spoke Spanish. Luckily, AJ did too. He told AJ that he did not know where his pregnant wife was and that she had not come home last night with their young daughter.
AJ did an amazing job keeping her composure and explained to her significant other to stay home and that someone would be there to speak with him soon. She immediately called the AC, explained the situation, and asked that law enforcement be sent to his address. She ended up speaking with Fairfield PD, the AC, and Social Workers during that shift as they all worked to reunite this family. AJ went above and beyond, all while working a busy shift on Labor & Delivery. She did not hesitate to get on the phone, answer questions, and speak with the husband multiple times when he called back while waiting for Fairfield PD to arrive.
AJ pours her heart and soul into her work and is truly dedicated to her patients' and their families' well-being. She went above and beyond the call of duty for this family, offering compassion and empathy with an unwavering commitment to make a difference in their lives. Without any other family nearby, I know the father was so relieved to have someone from our team who could speak Spanish with him and explain what was going on. That connection is irreplaceable. The difference AJ made for this man and his daughter will never be forgotten, and we are so proud to have AJ on our team.
I believe if she had not worked so hard to help this poor family, it could have been many more agonizing hours or days for the husband and family, not knowing what happened. AJ has always been such a wonderful team member and nurse, and this event just ensured how I believe she touches so many lives in her young nursing career and how many more she will touch in the future. I am so proud to work alongside her.
2nd Nomination
Our experience in Labor and Delivery at NorthBay exceeded our expectations. It was obvious that the staff treated us like family. Even before I was admitted, AJ made sure my wife and I had a room together so we would be comfortable waiting for lab results to see if I would be admitted. When I was admitted for preeclampsia, she reassured my wife and me, and we knew we were getting the best care possible.
As a nurse, I could tell she was very meticulous in my care and was advocating for me my entire time on Labor and Delivery. Her expertise was apparent, as she identified and prevented complications that could have resulted in adverse outcomes. She brought a lot of comfort in a very stressful time, day after day, and we were happy to see her every morning. AJ and two other nurses provided the best support possible during the hours of pushing. I knew whatever these women recommended, they had my best interest at heart.
