Later that day, the patient was able to leave his hospital room and get one last look at the outside world, with his family members by his side. I am humbled and honored to have a coworker who is endlessly thoughtful and kind.
Adrienne truly embodies what it is to be a nurse; she has a profound concern for the human condition and maintaining the dignity of her patients, as well as a deep understanding of the complex clinical nursing care that is paramount to caring for the critically ill patient. One of the most difficult aspects of this profession is meeting patients and families during the worst moments of their lives. Adrienne is able to bridge the gap between caring for the physical needs of the patient and acknowledging the emotional and spiritual aspects that create the whole individual. One example of this strength is when Adrienne cared for a patient in the last days of his life. The patient was critically ill and not a candidate for further interventions. The patient had a large family, with children in all life stages, and they were struggling with accepting the patient's dire status. Adrienne developed a rapport with the family and learned that the patient desperately wanted to go outside or just leave his hospital room for a moment. During interdisciplinary rounds, Adrienne brought up the topic, involving palliative care in a discussion with the patient and his family. Although Adrienne knew that going outside was not possible for this patient due to his tenuous status, she pushed for the opportunity to transport him in a physical therapy chair with the help of other staff members to sit in front of the large windows that look out to the Golden Gate Bridge. Later that day, the patient was able to leave his hospital room and get one last look at the outside world, with his family members by his side. I am humbled and honored to have a coworker who is endlessly thoughtful and kind. Through her advocacy, the patient and his family were given the knowledge of what to expect. This monumental act during a time of such uncertainty is just one example of the thoughtful way in which Adrienne tends to her patients and their families.
