It was one of the usual busy nights on Mother/Baby unit during which you hear babies crying, mothers calling for help, phones ringing, and admissions coming and coming. There was this particular patient in room 19-2 that I won't forget. She was a young Hispanic first time mother who spoke English well. She kept her baby at the bedside and took care of her very well. However, the baby would not stop crying. The newborn was examined and assessed by the pediatrician and the nurse and no source of pain or discomfort was found. She was fed adequately, passed stool and voided, comforted by the mother. Yet the baby would still cry. We concluded that it was the baby who was either over stimulated by the birth process and the activity afterwards or one of the babies who was difficult to console.

The mother felt bad. She was tired but wanted to keep her baby at the bedside. She questioned whether there was anything wrong with the way she took care of her newborn child. It was easy to read from her face that she was anxious and felt guilty. The patient was assured that she was doing everything right and baby was fine too.

Ahmad was one of the nurses on the floor that night but she not the nurse who took care of that patient. It is normal for her to be very well aware of not only all the staff on the floor but also all the patients on the floor. Thus, she visited and helped the patient in room 19-2 herself on several occasions during the course of the shift. And she was the one who pointed out that the mother was getting tired at one point and should take some rest. As MAhmad's break time approached, she offered the patient to take care of her baby so she could get some sleep. The patient gladly agreed. Ahmed stayed with the baby, bathed and carried her. After some time the newborn fell asleep and so did the mother.

Ahmad devoted her own time to help a patient during the busy night. Tired herself, busy just like everyone else she did not miss the opportunity to help others. This is just one out of many, many examples to illustrate who Ms. Muhtaseb is. She is a truly caring nurse and a human being who loves people and helping others.

Working with Ms. Muhtaseb allows me to witness many events when this nurse goes above and beyond in order to help our patients and her coworkers. Listening to the testimonies by many of the A/B8 unit nurses during the staff interviews, I testify, that Ms. Muhtaseb is an angel in a human form; She is the shining star of all stars; She is the Mother/Baby DAISY.
