"Aimee's here!" One of our patients said to me with a smile. "Yep, that's her laugh" I replied. I would wager that all of our patients know Aimee's infectious laughter. Having worked with her for years, I have seen her go the extra mile for both patients and co-workers, making an impact on many lives. More recently, I saw another example of her generous nature. She and I were the only two nurses in infusion that day. Aimee had gone over to speak with a patient and sat down beside her. I could only hear parts of her conversation, but suddenly, she stood up with Aimee, crying, hugging, and thanking her. Later, Aimee explained the exchange with tears in her eyes, and mine. A couple of days later, I approached the patient and asked her if I could share what had happened with Aimee that day.

In her words, Aimee had sat down to talk with her, and she shared some of the hardships that had developed as a result of her illness. Down from 2 incomes to 1, she and her boyfriend were having to make some financial cuts. One of these was cutting out "family night" which included a movie and pizza. Aimee listened to her. The next time she came in for treatment, the exchange that I witnessed was Aimee giving her a $50 gift card for Papa John's Pizza, two gas cards and she had prepped the paperwork and resources for financial assistance for rent, etc. The patient told her "no one ever listens" and Aimee's response was "I listen and care when you talk". Aimee lives out the values of IU Health in doing good in the lives of others, with compassion and making a difference.
