When Aimee Lipnickey came to work in the Family Birth Center one day last year she had no idea the impact she would play in the life of one of her littlest patients. On that morning Aimee would face the issue which no labor and delivery likes to be deal with: an infant who was about to come into the world which would be incompatible with life. If the fetus survived the delivery it would not survive the outside world for very long. What made this case especially difficult was the fact that the mother had not come to terms with the severe handicaps of her unborn child. The unselfish behavior of Aimee to care for this patient adds another dimension to this compelling story. Aimee volunteered to care for this patient and throughout the labor, Aimee consoled and attempted to help this patient face the reality surrounding her unborn baby. Once the patient delivered, she discharged herself from the hospital, leaving her baby who remained alive in the hospital’s care. Knowing that the baby did not have long to live, Aimee went above and beyond the call of duty when she arranged hospice care to come in, medicate the baby if necessary, and remain with the baby as long as it lived. Aimee did not want the baby to be left alone. If you ask Aimee if what she did that day was special she will just say she was doing what she went into nursing for “to help her patients no matter what the circumstances.” The compassionate and extraordinary care administered by Aimee, makes her a perfect candidate for the first DAISY award.
