We had a terminally ill patient in our unit awaiting hospice placement. The family was unable to spend a lot of time at the bedside. As the patient became increasingly agitated and frightened, Alan was frequently found at the patient's bedside stroking the patient's face and whispering comforting words. Alan is not normally a "toucher", but he went out of his comfort zone to comfort a suffering patient.
