…Everyone is absolutely extraordinary. However, there was something that really differentiated Alan. Maybe it was just all the effort he put in to understanding me better all those nights, whether it was simply always asking me if I wanted to play chess with him, or ping pong or the little horseshoe game he made up on the deck during deck breaks. Those moments were priceless and will be the ones that I will never forget. Alan is not only a nurse, but he is a truly great friend, he is compassionate, understanding, and willing to listen. He is inspiring, encouraging, and a great father figure. There are so many qualities in this patient man that I wish to apply to myself better; as well as when I become a father.
Since my discharge, my own relationship with my dad has improved greatly. Maybe having Alan there to listen to me all those nights in the community room helped me get to this point. All I know is that he makes an excellent nurse/charge nurse/ friend and is an outstanding individual. I truly believe Alan deserves this award not only for his skill, but for his heart. Alan is one of the greatest role models in my life and I’m tearing up as I’m writing this.
